TITLE: Circulation Desk Attendant

PURPOSE: Covering the circulation desk; assisting patrons in with any questions, concerns, or requests; handling books to be checked in and out of circulation; getting the library ready for each day.


  1. Assist patrons with any and all location and information requests, book titles, forms, copier, fax machine, computers, etc; place patrons on computers; handle patron book requests.
  2. Taking patron applications, entering data, verifying residency, issuing cards.
  3. Check materials in and out using circulation software; collect and check in books from drop box on a daily basis; make note of and record any dirty/damaged materials being returned.
  4. Receive money for fines, lost books, rentals, and membership renewals; Balance cash drawer and close out at the end of the night.
  5. Answer the telephone and take messages; make reminder phone calls for materials that are soon to be due.
  6. Opening and closing the library in accordance to library processes and procedures.
  7. Maintain an organized circulation desk and files.
  8. Greeting all patrons warmly as they enter the library.


Must have PA Child Abuse Clearances

An example of acceptable qualifications for this classification is a combination of education and job training which indicates possession of skills, knowledge, and abilities listed below. An example of acceptable qualifications for this position include a high school diploma or equivalent certification and a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a customer service position (preferably in a library setting).

Working Conditions
Work is performed at a main hub in the front of the library with frequent interruptions from patrons and staff. Noise levels are likely rise during busy periods and while programs are in session. Work is performed while standing or sitting. Must be able to stand and move around for long periods of time. May be required to lift light weights, e.g. lifting books and audiovisual equipment and pushing book carts. Position may entail bending, stooping, reaching and standing on a daily basis. Some degree of stress in public contact. Evening and weekend availability required. $8.50/hour.
